Last weekend I downed four cups of coffee at brunch and decided to rearrange our kitchen. Since we've been living here, we've worked within the confines of the set-up as it was when we moved in and it sucked. The island was placed parallel to the stove and counter top and smashed up next to our refrigerator, also placed parallel to the counter. This set up was really limiting and required some improvised yoga poses to open and retrieve items from the refrigerator if there was a cat or another human in the kitchen. Thankfully, the island, which is a cabinet unit from the original construction tricked out with a jerry-rigged laminate surface, is mobile. We pulled it out a couple feet and swiveled the refrigerator around to back up against the wall, allowing the door full range of motion and accessibility from all angles. Somehow Lane felt that the few feet we added to the space wasn't enough and he pushed the island out into the dining room on a diagonal and voila! instant enormous kitchen!
We're able to use much more of the island workspace -- before it was crammed full of all our dry goods jars, oils and vinegars and mail. Now I've put all the jars and cooking oils and vinegars on the counter top and only keep the utensil urn and paper towel dispenser permanently on the island. Cooking is far less stressful now with more room to spread out. Next up is organizing our cabinets!
I like it!
