Happy New Year, Please Vacate My Premises

Yesterday I had a routine check-up and surprise! This baby is huge. I'm at 33w3d and I'm measuring at 36w. Lane and I were not really surprised as we weighed in at 10 pounds and 9.5 pounds, respectively; however, we earned ourselves another trip to the creepy Prenatal Diagnostic Center for an ultrasound.

As anxious as we both are to meet this person, we'd like to think that maybe the doctors got the dates wrong and baby is getting ready to come out and party. HEY, BABY, WE'RE READY FOR YOU.

My mom and my younger sister hosted a baby shower for us on Sunday and it was adorable. There was a baby product showcase showdown (my team won!), snacks, mimosas and cupcakes. We now have three board book copies of Goodnight Moon and two of Runaway Bunny. My friend's mother gave us a board book copy of Corduroy and I couldn't make it past the second page without crying. He's so lonely in the store and he lost his button! We also got some tiny Giants gear just in time for Spring Training (pitchers and catchers report February 12!). I made my own stop at the Dugout Store, but only managed to find larger sizes, which I choose to see as an omen that we'll still be playing in November.

I spent three hours on Sunday measuring the baby's room and doing math to come up with a floor plan. Here's what the first draft looks like:

I did make one modification to add a cozy reading spot. The bookshelf will be moved all the way into the corner and next to it will be an 18" square floor pillow with some smaller throw pillows. Ideally, we'd like to get a vintage low boy dresser for the changing table, but if we can't find anything in our price range, we'll go Malm. We were originally counting on a Pottery Barn crib hand-me-down, but it turns out it was also promised to a few other expecting families, so now we have to choose a crib. I'm pretty fond of the Jenny Lind style cribs and we both really like the Ikea Gulliver crib, but neither one of us wants to go to Ikea again for at least another seven years. I'm keeping an eye on Craigslist and the Golden Gate Mothers Group classifieds for cribs and other essentials like a glider and a baby swing.

We're keeping the furniture simple: white crib, grey bookshelf, white cubby storage shelves and stained oak dresser. The large area rug will be white or ivory with a red/white striped rug under the crib. (I know, OMG WHITE RUG IN BABY'S ROOM. Here's the deal: we have a great relationship with our cleaners, a colored rug would overwhelm the space and a neutral tone would turn it into a beige hovel. That is all.) We've also opted for a clothes rack instead of a full wardrobe to keep the space relatively open. The room gets no natural light, so the last thing we want is for the baby to feel cluttered and surrounded by menacing pieces of furniture. There will be plenty of pops of red and blue from the bedding, art, storage baskets and toys and blankets.

Check out my nursery board on Pinterest to get an idea of where (we think) this is all going.

I never thought I'd say this, but internet shopping is starting to make me feel bad. Yes, it is SO easy to just order everything you need via Amazon Prime, but I get more packages than anyone in the office and I'm feeling guilty about not supporting local businesses or taking advantage of all the used things to be had on Craigslist. On the other hand, I'm hugely pregnant and Lane works 15-hour days, so it's not like there is a lot of time or energy we have for renting a Zipcar on the one day off we get together to shop around town. It's a relief to just have it show up on the doorstep. Perhaps there is a New Year's resolution in there, or at least an After the Baby Comes resolution.

  1. Just wanted to pop in and say congratulations :) I know we don't *really* know each other in real life, but that's what the internet is for, right?
